Attendance and Tardiness

Good attendance is an essential part of Del Webb Middle School's student success. When students miss classroom instruction, it negatively affects their success, including grades, test scores, and graduation rates. Students who exceed ten percent (10%) or more of enrolled days per semester for any reason, whether excused or unexcused, in any course may be denied credit and receive a failing semester grade for that course.
Upon return from an absence, students have three days to submit their absence excuse. After three days, the school will not excuse the absence. Parents and students must work with the school to develop an intervention plan for students with poor attendance.

Students will not be able to enter the school building until 7:40 am unless they have an early bird class or have made prior arrangements with a teacher. Students must leave campus each day at 2:11 pm unless they are involved in an approved after-school activity. Students loitering after school are not supervised and are subject to disciplinary action such as detention, in-school suspension, or a required parent conference.

Approved Absences

Regular school attendance is the responsibility of the student and parents. An approved absence shall include a medically documented illness, court appearances, religious holidays, or an emergency outside the control of the student or the student’s family. Del Webb MS no longer allows pre-arranged absences. Excuses not classified above are subject to the approval of the administration.

Absence Notes

Parents can submit attendance notes virtually; parents can complete the online absence form on the school website under the Parents tab. If parents cannot complete the form online, students returning to school after an absence must bring their excuse notes to the Main Office before school. Parents/students have three days to electronically submit or bring in a written excuse before the absence is counted as an unapproved absence. Absence notes should include the following information: student name, student number, grade, date, the reason for absence, and a parent's signature.
According to CCSD Policy 5113, “Parents or legal guardians of students who have been absent shall be required to present to the school a statement giving the reason for the absence. Absences that are unapproved/unexcused are considered truancies. The Clark County School District will strictly enforce attendance and truancy regulations and will refer habitual truants to local law enforcement as per state law.”
If a student is tardy to school or absent from a class because of a doctor or dental appointment, please bring a note from the doctor or dentist’s office so that the school can excuse the tardy or absence. A parent or doctor’s note may excuse medical appointments or dental appointments scheduled during school hours.
Once students have arrived at school, they cannot leave campus during or between classes without a passport. Passports are issued for medical/dental appointments, illness, or any other justifiable reason. Students who leave campus without a passport may be subject to disciplinary action. Parents, guardians, or other adults must present a photo ID and be listed in Infinite Campus for a student to be released to them.

Tardiness

Students who arrive late to school should report to the Student Success Office to sign in and be issued an admit pass. Students who have a note from a parent for their first two tardies, with a valid excuse, will be given an excused tardy pass; all others will be considered unexcused and receive a late pass.

When changing classes, students must be inside the classroom door when the bell rings, or they will be considered tardy. Students who are tardy to class must sign the teacher’s tardy log and be marked tardy in Infinite Campus. Following are the disciplinary consequences for tardies:

1st tardy: Warning
2nd tardy: Parent Contact
3rd tardy: Counselor Referral
4th tardy: 1 day of Student Success Office Detention
5th tardy: 2 days of Student Success Office Detention

Students exceeding five tardies in a semester are subject to additional consequences such as further detentions and/or in-school suspension. Parents may excuse two tardies per semester for the first class period with a valid excuse.

30 Minutes Late

Students who arrive 30 minutes or later to class are considered absent. Students must check-in with the Main Office to get an admittance pass to class.

Parents/guardians must come to the school Registrar’s Office to fill out a withdrawal form at least 24 hours before a student’s last day of school. A student can not be officially withdrawn until all school-issued materials (Chromebooks, textbooks, library books, etc.) are returned, and all fees are paid.
Students must be withdrawn from one school before they can be enrolled in another school. No “on the spot” withdrawals will be honored. The entire process generally takes 48 hours. Please plan accordingly.
A student withdrawing during the last three weeks of the school year who plans to re-enroll in the District the following year will be kept on the school roll and marked absent for the remainder of the school year. The enforcement of attendance rules, grading procedures, and missed test scores will affect final grades and the awarding of credit.

Truancy

Student attendance is vital to the educational experience of students. When a student is absent from school without a valid excuse, the absence is deemed unapproved and is considered truancy. When a student has three or more truancies, the student is declared to be a habitual truant. The following procedures are to be enforced:
The Del Webb Middle School Student Success Office will notify parents in writing on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd truancy.
A referral will be made to the CCSD Attendance Enforcement Office for support and intervention options.
A parent conference will be scheduled before a referral for habitual truancy.
Students who acquire 20 consecutive, unapproved absences will be withdrawn from school.
Students are required to be in their designated classrooms during instructional time. Students may not be elsewhere on campus without the knowledge and permission of their teacher or a school staff member (nurse, counselor, administrator, etc.). Students who are not in their assigned location or an area designated by school staff will be deemed truant and marked absent. Each truancy is counted as an unexcused absence under the CCSD attendance policy, which may lead to interventions, disciplinary consequences, or a visit to a family court judge.
