NEW FOR THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR!
Del Webb Middle School is excited to launch the FocusOn STEAM initiative -- a new electives program focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Students in grades 6-8 will choose a program pathway based on their interests. With courses in robotics, coding, digital media, engineering, advanced mathematics, and more, there are endless opportunities for students to gain real-world skills for the 21st-century.
FocusOn STEAM Course Pathways
- Robotics
Robotics I - Middle school students are introduced to procedural thinking, pattern recognition, and algorithm design to come up with a step-by-step strategy for solving a problem. Students will learn how to program their own robots to move, make noise, light up, and follow other instructions as directed.
Robotics II - builds on Robotics I and students will learn basic mechanical physics to apply in robotic engineering. Middle school students will build on procedural thinking, pattern recognition, and algorithm design from Robotics I to develop solving problem strategies. Students will enhance their knowledge on how to build different robots and program them to accomplish specific tasks and challenges.
- Coding
Introduction to Computer Coding - is an introductory, classroom-based course designed for the students new to Computer Science. The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, web development, design, and data. The course inspires students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices.
Computer Design II (App Development and Web Design) - explores how Web and Mobile Applications have changed the way we live and work. This media rich and highly interactive hands-on course guides students through the exciting process of creating their own web or mobile apps using JavaScript. Along the way students will learn critical STEM skills, develop confidence, and build necessary skills for high school and beyond.
Digital Game Design - is a course which builds art, math, and coding skills, and offers students an outlet to show what they know. This course uses game-making apps, games, and websites to balance the fun of play with the challenge of coding and design. Students will embark on creative, energizing experiences that'll get them thinking in new, exciting ways.
- Digital Graphic Design
Introduction to Graphic Design - This semester-based course emphasis is to foster creativity and self expression. The course is offered in an environment where the development of original ideas that lead to innovative production is pursued. This course is an introduction to applications that allow users to explore a variety of creative digital art activities. These may include the creation of photographs, videos, animations, graphic designs, illustrations, and designing a website.
Graphic Design II - Graphic Design Fundamentals is an introductory course designed to expose students to the areas of Graphic Design and Web Design using industry programs.. This course will help students examine the various areas in design and visual arts and allow students to develop, nurture and strengthen their creative and artistic talents. Students will be engaged in 2D and 3D fine art, web design, digital photography, and portfolio development. This hands-on program will help students develop and strengthen their creative, communication, and conceptualization skills.
Graphic Design III- Graphic Design Fundamentals is an introductory course designed to expose students to the areas of Graphic Design and Web Design using industry programs.. This course will help students examine the various areas in design and visual arts and allow students to develop, nurture and strengthen their creative and artistic talents. Students will be engaged in 2D and 3D fine art, web design, digital photography, and portfolio development.
- Engineering
Introduction to Engineering Design - This semester-based course is a basic introduction to engineering for all students which empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. The program’ s courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.
Engineering Design - Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply hands-on, collaborative problem solving focused on real-world challenges, students use and stretch their imaginations in brand-new ways and connect their learning to life.
Engineering Science - Engineering science is a year-long course that will utilize the processes and procedures that engineers use in the real world. The course will allow students to apply their conceptual understanding of algebra and geometry with physical science concepts in order to develop solutions to various challenge projects presented throughout the year. Challenge projects will include illuminated sign construction by the application and analysis of algebraic equations and development of compound machines engineered to make an everyday task easier.
